Caring for tattoos in summer

Summer tattoo myths and facts: how to care for your tattoos and why you need not be afraid to get one

Summer is here: sunshine, beaches and free time! But if you love tattoos, you have probably heard these familiar questions: “Can I get a tattoo in summer?” and “How should I care for it?”. Many people still believe that summer is not a good time to get tattooed, but that is a myth! With proper care and discipline, you can enjoy your new tattoo whatever the season.

Getting tattooed in summer: is it possible?

Many people worry that summer heat and sunshine will damage a new tattoo. With proper care and discipline, however, summer need not be an obstacle.

Protect your tattoo from direct sunlight

It is important to avoid sun exposure during the first 15–20 days after getting tattooed.
If your tattoo is on an exposed area such as your arms, legs or neck, wear clothing that covers it, preferably white to reduce heat.

Use a high-factor sunscreen

Once your tattoo has healed, apply sunscreen to it. This helps protect it from fading and keeps its colours vibrant.

Choose suitable areas for a summer tattoo
Some parts of the body are easier to protect in summer:

For men: The upper legs: swimming shorts cover them well.
For women: Intimate areas and certain parts of the chest that swimwear shields from sunlight.

Why does tattoo care matter?

Tattoos are more than drawings: they express individuality. Looking after them helps keep them fresh and vibrant:

Sunlight is the enemy of colour. Harmful UV rays accelerate fading, so caring for your tattoo matters all year round, not just in summer.
Skin health comes first. Always consult your tattoo artist for further advice and use the aftercare products they recommend.
